Gas work sits in a different category from the rest of residential plumbing. A water leak damages a house. A gas leak is a different order of risk entirely, and that single fact explains why gas lines are permitted, inspected, and off-limits to general handymen in Texas regardless of how straightforward the run looks.
If You Smell Gas
This belongs at the top rather than buried further down, because the sequence matters and the instinct to investigate is the wrong one.
- Get everyone out of the building first.
- Do not operate anything electrical on the way out. Not light switches, not the garage door, not a phone. A switch arcing is an ignition source.
- Do not look for the leak and do not try to shut off an appliance valve inside a house that already smells of gas.
- From outside and well clear, call the gas utility emergency line.
Everything else, including any repair, comes after the utility has made the property safe. Natural gas is odourless on its own; the sulphur smell is an additive put there specifically so people evacuate. Treat it as doing its job.
What Gas Lines Fail From
Failures cluster around a few causes, and most are visible before they become dangerous.
Corrosion
Black iron pipe rusts, particularly where it passes through a slab, runs underground, or sits in a damp crawl space. In the Dallas area the soil chemistry combined with clay that holds moisture against buried pipe accelerates this. Visible flaking rust or pitting on an exposed run is worth having looked at rather than painted over.
Soil movement
The same expansive Blackland clay that cracks sewer lines and opens slab leaks puts strain on buried gas pipe. Rigid pipe crossing an area of active movement is under load it was never designed to carry, and joints are where that shows first.
Bad previous work
This is the one we find most often on outdoor additions. A grill or fire pit line run without a permit tends to share a set of faults: pipe sized for convenience rather than for the appliance load, no sediment trap, no dedicated shut-off, insufficient burial depth, and joints that were never pressure tested. It works on the day it is installed, which is precisely what makes it convincing.
Appliance connections
Flexible connectors behind ranges and dryers are a common leak point, especially where the appliance has been pulled out and pushed back repeatedly. Older uncoated brass connectors are a known failure risk and worth replacing on sight.
Warning Signs Short of a Smell
Not every leak announces itself strongly enough to notice, particularly outdoors where gas disperses.
- A hissing or whistling sound near a gas line or appliance.
- Dead or yellowing grass in a patch over a buried run, while the surrounding lawn is fine.
- Bubbling in standing water or wet soil above the line.
- A gas bill that has climbed with no change in usage.
- Pilot lights that keep going out, or burner flames that are yellow or orange rather than crisp blue.
- Persistent headaches or nausea indoors that improve when you leave the house.
That last one is worth taking seriously. It can indicate incomplete combustion producing carbon monoxide, which unlike natural gas has no smell and no additive.
Repair or Replace a Gas Line
The decision depends on whether the fault is local or systemic, and a pressure test is what separates the two.

That last row catches people out. Adding a gas range, a pool heater or an outdoor kitchen to a system sized years ago for two appliances can leave everything on the line starved. The symptom is not a leak but poor performance, most noticeably a water heater that struggles whenever another appliance fires.
What Correct Installation Involves
A properly done gas installation has a specific set of features, and they are reasonable things to ask about before work starts.
The pipe is sized for the combined BTU load of everything it will feed, not for the nearest convenient diameter. There is a dedicated shut-off valve at each appliance so one unit can be isolated without killing gas to the house. There is a sediment trap ahead of each appliance to catch debris and moisture before it reaches the control valve. Underground runs are buried to the required depth and protected where they surface. And the completed system is pressure tested and held, with the test still standing when the inspector arrives.
Permitting is not bureaucracy on this work. The inspection is an independent check on something that has no visible failure mode until it has already failed, and an undocumented gas installation is also a problem that surfaces at the point of sale.
